This is an annual festival held in Pocklington.
The name comes from Thomas Pelling who was a travelling entertainer and whose act was to 'fly' down a rope
from a great height, dressed with wings. He came to an untimely end when performing his act in Pocklington
and a plaque on the east end of the outside of the church commemorates the sad event.
The festival comprises a long weekend during which a variety of fund-raising activities take place. These include
abseiling from the top of the tower, flying teddy bears, and other air-related
events like hot air balloons and model aircraft.
A model of Pocklington airfield is often on display as well as an art
exhibition with a flying theme.
Annual festival to be a flyer!
Pocklington’s Flying Man Festival takes to the skies again this May. The fifth annual festival takes place on the 7, 8 and 9 May. Organisers are already recruiting people to take part in the Sponsored Abseil down All Saints’ Church Tower. The abseil takes place on Saturday 9th May between 10am and 4pm. A festival spokesperson said: “There are four ways you can join in; sponsor one of the local daredevils and raise funds for charity, take part – abseil yourself and experience the buzz, be one of those who take a prize for the most sponsored abseil or simply watch the action. “This promises to be a thrilling event for all adventurous and developing athletes”
