What is it?
-
“Open the
Book” is a series of 90 Bible stories presented in weekly collective
worship over three school years;
-
The stories
are taken from “The Lion Storyteller Bible” by Bob Hartman and two
Storybooks produced especially for the project.
-
The stories
are presented using a variety of storytelling techniques.
-
The
storyteller team for each school is made up of local volunteers drawn from
local churches.
-
All
volunteers are trained and undertake to keep to the Code of Practice
of working in schools.
-
The project
is a joint initiative by the Diocesan Board of Education and local
deaneries.
-
“Open the Book” is offered as a free service to local schools.
What are our aims?
-
To present the Bible in an accessible, enjoyable way.
-
To enable every child to hear the story of the Bible during their primary
years.
-
To encourage links between school and church in a local context.
-
To equip, encourage and enable adults to work with children in schools.
The
South Wold Deanery
The South Wold Deanery is using
the Open the Book material for school assemblies. Every half term we
visit
Pocklington Junior School,
Pocklington C of E
Infants School,
Barmby Moor C of E Primary School
and Fangfoss C of E Primary School with an ecumenical team. We prepare
the story in advance, work out the sketch choosing and making props,
sorting out simple costumes, mostly tabards which are sufficient,
quick and easy and the odd head dress. At school, we use volunteer
children to role play the characters whilst we narrate the story and
read the parts. We operate a minimalist approach which seems to work
well with the fervent imaginations of our children. Our feedback
encourages us to continue this approach of child involvement and our 5
minute assemblies have become a highlight which the children look
forward to. If you would like to get involved or would like more
information, please contact either Sue Holmes or Paul Taylor.
Open the Book is also being used in
York under the auspices of YoYo and in Malton / Norton with a local ecumenical
team.
